Solo exhibit: City in Bloom
ViewPoint Gallery, August 2022

Picture
City in Bloom depicts the everyday beauty of untended (or under-tended) flowers and shrubs set against a backdrop of urban structures.  The natural scenery intertwines with the constructed landscape, creating a kaleidoscope of colours, textures, and shapes.  The unexpected effect is an inner-city, rough-around-the-edges Garden of Eden.

The origins of this project can be found in my propensity for strolling around my neighbourhood in peninsula Halifax.  The photographs were created gradually over a 5-year period.  I began to notice the interface between two separate spheres – the natural landscape on one hand and the built terrain on the other.

The resulting mash-up creates an explosion of disparate visual elements that share a similar aesthetic – sturdy, unadorned, and functional.  The effect is visually pleasing.  And it symbolizes for me some of the positive aspects of urban life: diversity, symbiosis, and dynamic interactions.

The City in Bloom exhibit consists of 24 images organized in 4 clusters of 6 images each.
